I thought it was about time I purchased a GPS navigation software for my Orange SPV M600 after upgrading from my Nokia 6680. I used to use NaviCore, which wasn't too bad (can you believe all I had to do was insert the storage card they sent me into the device and it worked?). The features of TomTom sounded enticing though with the ability to use my contacts addresses, rather than having to type in all the addresses again like I did for NaviCore. So, it was either CoPilot Live 7 or TomTom Navigator 5. I thought as market leader, there must be good reason to go for TomTom, so went ahead and purchased TomTom Navigator 5 Software and Maps of Western Europe.

For the record, I have a windows XP SP2 machine, with ActiveSync version 4.2.0 (Build 4876), connected (successfully) via USB to my Orange SPV M600. Now, the prudent among you will notice that TomTom doesn't actually (currently) list the M600 in their compatibility list. Yeah, I noticed that too after I had purchased it! I suspect I saw M500 and misread that as my device. Oops! However, in my defense, I'm sure I read that TomTom Navigator 5.2XX should now support Windows Mobile 5.

When I first tried to install it, the application just crashed leaving Event ID = 1000 in my event log (which doesn't give much details other than there was a fault with setup.exe), and unfortunately my usual source to find out more about event logs (www.eventid.net) didn't have anything that provided any assistance in this case.

I then did some "Googling" and found out about the TomTom update 5.2XX. However, the instructions say you can't install this update until 5.00 has been installed?!? Regardless, I had to try something, so I tried installing this update first, but no joy.

So, here's the process (took my a while to find this all out!), to get TomTom to work on your mobile ...

Copy the following files from the Application/User guide CD (not CD1 which I did first off! How silly of me to think the CD labelled CD1 is not the first CD to put in your drive - would be nice if it prompted you to say that too ... but no) onto the root of your storage card on your device:

gps.cab
PIMAddIn.cab
wzd.cab
engf.cab
ttn.cab

On the Windows Mobile device, go to Start > File Explorer.

Click on gps.cab to install (on your storage card preferrably).

Click on PIMAddIn.cab to install (on your storage card preferrably).

Click on wzd.cab to install (on your storage card preferrably).

Click on engf.cab to install (on your storage card preferrably).

At this point, my installation failed saying not enough room (I selected the storage card, and there was plenty of room!). I removed files from the storage card, just in case. Still no joy, so thought maybe a reboot was in order. So I switched the device off, turned it on, but the device refused to start up. I then removed battery and re-inserted it, and started up again. Maybe it was a one-off - but worth mentioning.

Error reporting was turned on, and I got "A problem has occurred with gwes.exe".

The device wasn't connecting to the PC, so I removed and replugged in the USB cable.

OK, going back to the install, open File Explorer again, and run engf.cab. However, it wouldn't install still. I then put this down the the fact that even though I was selecting the storage card, that wasn't were it was installing. So I removed a few images and video files from the device itself to clear some room. This time it installed!

Click on ttn.cab  (on your storage card preferrably).

Download the 5.2XX update from TomTom and extract the files. Run the 5.2XX update (setup.exe) from TomTom from your PC. On the device it should prompt you that old version will removed before installing. Click OK.

It then prompts you to restart.

To install the map of Great Britain, insert CD1.

When the CD autostarted, it then prompted me: "Not enough free space on temporary folder. Cannot run Setup" - (I had 28GB free on the PC, so assumed it was talking about the device). The device had 10MB free storage and 18MB free program. The storage card in it had 947MB free. I rebooted both the PC and the device. Still no joy. So I then copied the contents of the CD to my hard drive, and ran the setup from there.

Again, running the install fails if you try and install it straight onto the device - not a surpise by this stage! So I selected to install it to a folder on the computer.

Open ActiveSync and select "Explore".

Browse to the storage card (My Windows Mobile-Based Device > Storage Card).

Copy the folder Great_Britain_Plus to the root of your storage card. This may take some time, so go put the kettle on, put you feet up and bask in the knowledge that you're almost there (famous last words huh!?).

Copy the contents of the ZIP folder across to the zip folder on the device.

Run TomTom on the device. It will run you through a few questions, and then Bob's your uncle - it should all be running nicely. OK, OK, it didn't - as it said I didn't have a GPS device. I had to set an outgoing port for it (Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > Com Ports > New Outgoing Port).

So, even though my device is unsupported, the fact that they say it supports Windows Mobile 5 and the install fails before it even knows what my device is, makes me think TomTom's idea of QA is a line of monkey's playing with a few phones - OK, I'm being harsh, but I've waisted hours and hours on this (no, I haven't received a reply to my support request from TomTom which will presumably come back with "Your device is unsupported, we have your money, thank you, now go away please"). Can you tell it's been one of those days ;-)
